Hot Type Talks

Based on a suggestion of Jessica from Jester Fonts TbP presents the Hot Type Talks, short dialogues with font-designers. These talks aren't interviews but spotlights on the designers' current work providing some background information.

2002-03-16: Message from Renn Crump

I'm finally back with something new - something for St. Padees Day. Did it clear back in 1995, but I think it looks still pretty good. Hope you enjoy it!

2002-02-15: talking with Le Chef Rene

Rene, how about your own domain for your fonts? From time to time there are problems accessing your pages at AOL.

I haven't opened my own domain yet, but am working out the details for it as we speak. However, it probably won't happen til April or May sometime, as my husband and I are right in the middle of a big move, which is about 2000 miles. As soon as we're moved, unpacked, settled, and I can find the time to get back on the computer, I plan to move the site to my own domain...finally!

2001-12-30: talking with Apostrophe

What happened to The Lab's newsletter and the read section?

As far as the read section goes, I decided to get rid of the newsletter altogether, because the latest number of subscribers is huge (over 5000) and I would need to occupy the bandwidth for at least 5 hours every time I want to send out a newsletter. Any new releases will be announced on TbP or fontlover.com.

2001-10-25: email from Typesmith

Dear font lovers,
hello I am TypeSmith and a German fontaddict, I never saw a fonts & typography chatroom so I decided to create one for discussion about font-design, typography and prepress stuff. Would be glad to see somebody there. You can go to the room by using your browser via http://www.freewebz.com/typesmith/chat.html or use an IRC client, host is "webmaster.ca.us.webchat.org", channel is "#fonts&typography".
Greetings from Germany - TypeSmith

2001-09-19: talking with Aislinn

Aislinn, you recently launched your new font-site pureconfection.com. We are curious to know if you are planning to spend more time on font creation?

If I had more time, I would! I have many, many ideas doodled out on paper that I would love to try to incorporate into fonts. I'm finding lately that I have more inspirations for fonts than for graphics. However, as I'm sure many of my visitors know, "more time" is usually only a dream for me when I get caught up in school, work, and other activities!

Are there more free fonts to be expected?

Oh definitely. My free offerings will probably remain small, between ten and twenty-four characters each. I do have a free font, titled "Pencil Case", completed that I plan to offer as a tie-in with my upcoming showcase. Stay tuned!

Do you have something in the works - free or commercial?

Certainly! I have a commercial font, titled "Passages" about a quarter of the way finished. When completed, it will be a mix-and-match font like Kaorimaya, with six different themes. Three of the frames from "Passages" are shown here on the right. The three characters on the left are from "Pencil Case".

2001-09-13: talking with Jeff Levine

Jeff told me about some changes regarding his work on fonts:

Due to personal priorities in my life, I will no longer be making regular updates to my fonts site. There may be an occasional addition from time to time (and the photo section may be updated when pictures become available) but for the most part I have finished with this project.

Webmasters: DO NOT offer any bulk collections of my fonts. Please allow people to visit my site. All copyrights and "Terms of Usage" remain in efffect. The site may be inactive, but it is not closed. Unauthorized re-distribution of my files is still prohibited.
