Dennis, the master of FontPlays, created his first book cover: I saw an ad done with the ubiquitous HELLvetica, and wondered what sans fonts would make a similar header. I got to playing and this is what came out. Florence set by Derek Vogelpohl, and Amerika by Apostrophe. Both with full character sets at The L'ab. |
In the time of Julius Caesar, there were a people (the Helvetii) inhabiting that part of south-east Gaul which is now in Switzerland, and which was therefore called Helvetia. The Latin adjective "helveticus" can best be defined as "of or pertaining to Helvetia and/or the Helvetii"; the feminine singular and neuter plural forms are both "helvetica" - as used in the expression "CONFOEDERATIA HELVETICA" on some Swiss coins from 1875 (which must have been well before the "invention" of Linotype's "HELLvetica" font!) I wonder when Linotype will sue the Swiss Government? Foreword by Ron Haller Williams |
