There are three champions of font use integrity who are digging free font-sites for commercial fonts.
If they detect one, they start bothering the site owner:

Cupertino is a copyrighted font requiring purchase from the foundry which created it and you are violating the copyright by offering it for free download.

In honor of the artist(s) which work so hard to create marvelous fonts, please remove this download offer from your page.

Sincerely,

Font Police

Hi fontpolice,

you have to learn to do a better job. Before sending remove commands kindly check the fonts you are talking about. This Cupertino on my site has no copyright but a remark who created it: Mr. Beck. Have a look at
http://www.awbeck.com/products/fonts.html  and read what you find there:
Shareware is the means by which you get to really see what software can do for you before paying for it. Once
you have evaluated the item and find it usable and of worth to you you send the Shareware fee to the author.
Shareware is by no means free, Free software is called Freeware and no payment is asked by the author. If you
have and use shareware software you are obligated to send a payment if you use it. If you don;t plan on
sending a shareware payment then shareware should be deleted and non payment of shareware after extensive
use is just as much a violation of copyrights and licensing as copying any other piece of software.

So please don't bother me with sloppy work!

Oh, ten lashes with a wet noodle to all of us.  Our cyber detection has gone awry as the one of us who checked Cupertino has Corel's Cupertino installed (legally) on his system. We offer the humblest of apologies and suggest that we were blinded by the number of "AllType" converted fonts you have listed at your site.  So bloody inconvenient that none of them contain the original copyright information.

Oh, and might we suggest that you also re-download Mr. Beck's zip file of Cupertino?  He has a readme file with it that seems to be missing from your offering and in the readme it states: "If you pass it on it absolutely must be accompianied by this information file."

Sincerely,

subject: Illegal Font Distribution
After surfing your site I noticed you were freely distributing a copyrighted typeface from Fonthead Design called Noel. The URL to the font: http://moorstation.org/fontennium/celtic/noel.zip
Please remove the font from your website immediately. What you are doing is illegal. When you have done so, please email me back, otherwise I will be contacting your ISP regarding this matter. Thank you.

I decided to be nice even if Ethan himself used to post Noel as a free font before:

I am surprised to hear that Noel is a commercial font, because it was downloaded from another web-site in september or october last year and I've seen it on several other sites. Noel has been removed from my pages, but I am wondering why you are trying to threaten people. The simple information that it is a commercial font that should be removed would be sufficient.

Obviously I missed a new trend - some days before I was asked by 3IslandsPress to remove Attic font from my site. Believe it or not -  Attic has been distributed as Shareware for a long time, now it's at $ 49! I praised myself happy that I was allowed to keep my Attic font without paying this amount.
